2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Plug-In Features and Range

Kia had easily one of the biggest vehicle debuts at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show when it brought the all new 2017 Kia Niro Hybrid out on stage. However, just before they showed off the all-new HUV, Kia had another major announcement that may have gone overlooked: the creation of the company’s first ever Hybrid Plug-in vehicle. The 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Plug-In features and range are extremely impressive, and we can’t wait to see them in person when the vehicle goes on sale later this year!

What to Expect from the Optima Hybrid Plug-In?

It looks like this vehicle is going to deliver quite a bit! The hardest part is deciding where to start. The 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Plug-In is modeled after the redesigned 2016 Kia Optima, and features many of the sporty European design aspects that drivers have loved on that vehicle. However, one key difference between this vehicle and the 2016 Optima is the active grille on the Optima Hybrid Plug-In which features shutters that will open and close depending on how fast you are traveling. These will help improve your vehicle’s overall fuel economy and range.

How Far Can the Optima Hybrid Plug-In Go?

Kia estimates that the 2017 Optima Hybrid Plug-In will have a total range of almost 600 miles on a single charge of the battery and a single tank of gas. The powertrain of the vehicle is made up of a 2.0-liter “Nu” 4-cylinder engine, which produces 154-horsepower. The hybrid system is connected to a 50kW motor that is powered by a 9.8kWh lithium ion polymer battery pack. Kia says that the vehicle can run on just the battery pack for up to 27 miles, and as you are driving it will be recharged thanks to the Regenerative Braking System! As for recharging, the battery can be charged in less than three hours with a 240-volt charger.

Another feature that will help improve the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid Plug-In’s range and fuel economy is the new Eco-Driver Assist System. This system is built to coach the driver on when to coast, which will help the vehicle’s battery recharge as well as improve the car’s mileage.
